The Point System used in Military Pentathlon In every discipline, there is a base performance that yields 1000 points. For each unit of performance better (worse) than the base performance, a fixed number of points is added (subtracted) from 1000. Mathematically, this can be called a "linear scoring scheme" The base performance together with the incremental points and the performance increments are as shown below. After four disciplines, the total points for each athlete are calculated simply as the sum of the points reached in these disciplines. In the last discipline, the Cross-country, the leader thus identified starts first, and the other athletes start with a time lag according to the difference between the leader’s point sum and theirs. (The handicap starting method) So, in effect, the points of all five disciplines are added to determine the total score. Point system for men:
